Someone reaching back for me
The big excitement around my house is that a bunny has taken up part-time residence in the back yard. He's small and brown and likes to graze on our lawn.

Teddy likes to chase the bunny, who disappears into the daylilies and zooms along the fence line until he finds a hole and wiggles through. Teddy is sometimes coy about going out back, refusing to approach the sliding glass door, so Mom and I have been trying to get him excited by telling him there are squirrels out there. It is not always a lie. And when we walk past the bird seed area, always habited with squirrels and birds, I've been telling Teddy to "look at the squirrels," and he always perks up and goes on the stalk.

I suspect a campaign to get him to learn bunny would be successful, but I can't bring myself to do it. A jingle bell hangs from the sliding glass door handle, legacy of a fruitless attempt to train puppy!Teddy to let us know when he wanted to go out (he decided that warbling at us until we did what he wanted was a better strategy). My sister and I have begun opening the door a crack and then ringing the bell before we'll let Teddy go out. I doubt he could actually catch the bunny, but I couldn't bear it if he did.

Kirby is too sedate these days to chase anything, but I imagine he sniffs around the yard with extra fervor. He's certainly reluctant to return inside, even when it's ridiculously hot.

My sister and I both stayed home from work yesterday, me because of exhaustion (and I'd felt rotten on Monday and Tuesday, so when I woke up late I said the hell with it and called in sick. I had more than enough hours because of recent craziness) and her because of a headache. We walked Kirby and Teddy to the park in late afternoon, and met a black lab puppy named Batman along the path. Batman lives in the condos behind us, and Teddy is wild to play with him, although he's also confused, because that black puppy was his size, not bigger. He's gorgeous, his fur all glossy and sleek, and full of puppy energy. ♥

Other than that, I've caught up on Kings (oh, the love. oh, the sorrow), and Warehouse 13. I've also been watching the Tour de France, even though they're in the boring sprint stages again. And I have thoughts on Panic! At the Disco's split, but I'm not sure if I should write them up or not. My practice thus far has been to scatter my opinions hither and yon around LJ but not compile them into anything coherent.

Finally (almost), I am craving a Butterfinger Crunch bar liek woah.

Yesterday was one of those days where I got home, let the dogs out back, watered the pots to make sure my flowers and herbs didn't die from this heat, turned on the Tour de France on Versus, and collapsed into sleep. I can't even blame Teddy this time, because he raced off to bark at an invading squirrel well before my eyes closed for the long term. I woke briefly around one, brushed my teeth, and fell back asleep. Thirteen hours or so, all told. Probably better than taking a day off work, no matter how much I want one. *stretches*

So, hey, DC crew. Cobra Starship is playing DC on Wednesday 26 August. Rock and Roll Hotel, tickets are $20 and go on sale tomorrow at 10 am.

And, can anyone tell me if it's safe to park a car near the Rock and Roll Hotel? Because I've only been that way for plays that I knew would get out before metro closed.

Gonna Be All Right: Cheerful Things
[A fifth grade English teacher beat it into my head that "alright" is not a word. I avoided using "already" via tortuous sentence construction for years until I realized that one's okay.]

It's probably (definitely) way too tin-hatty of me, but Pete Wentz springing a recording of Brendon Urie singing Bob Marley upon the world makes me think that relations between the former Panic foursome can't be that bad. Jon Walker's dog is named Marley, after all! It's totally a secret message to the fans. They're all still friends. La la la, I can't hear you.

Slate presents a collection of the most ridiculous escapes in G.I. Joe history. The first war between G.I. Joe and Cobra (1985-86), as documented in the G.I. Joe animated series, was the most violent conflict in history never to result in a single causality. Through a combination of terrible aim, superhuman jumping ability, and impossibly reliable parachutes, every combatant escaped even the most dire of situations without so much as the angle of his beret askew.

The descriptions accompanying the video excerpts made me laugh and laugh. G.I. Joe was always my favorite, and watching as an adult only makes me appreciate the absurdity more.

Fanfiction recommendations! I knew there was something I was forgetting yesterday: I linked to a bunch of stories on my delicious over the weekend. There's some Star Trek, including an amazing video (look, We Go Together is a totally valid song choice, okay?), a fantastic Burn Notice/NCIS crossover (Michael and Ziva, in 1990s Lebanon), Terminator goodness, and also bandom stories, if you're not trying to avoid them for the moment.

Now I have to complete my self-evaluation for the year, which is not cheerful at all. And also late, because the HR people didn't email about it!

That Green Gentleman should not make me sad
I listened to Panic at the Disco on the metro ride home (the air conditioning was not working in our rail car, ugh), mostly live recordings, and really. I should not find it sniffle-inducing that their harmony won't sound the same again. *sigh sigh sigh*

LJ has been really slow lately, and this is not the way I wanted it to get lively again. [For those not on the bandom twilight bark, Ryan Ross, chief lyricist, guitarist, and Jon Walker, bassist, are leaving the band. Two out of four doesn't seem very panic-like to me, but I guess le Wentz doesn't agree?] I mean, my perspective is always that they're their own people, and they get to make decisions for themselves, but still.

This weekend was lazy, which was just what I needed. I washed laundry, grilled out for Independence Day (chicken, with sesame noodles and cole slaw), and napped a lot with my puppies. Also watched much tennis and some cycling. Phil and Paul are ♥

There was going to be brief reactions to dramatic things I've seen lately, but all that's kind of out of my head right now. A précis: more original Star Trek, Kings, annnnnd. I don't remember. Lord.

Do What You Want to, There's No One to Stop You
Ed McMahon, Farrah Fawcett, and Michael Jackson, gone in one week? Yikes. Farewell, cultural icons, for good or ill. I could write up jumbled thoughts about how huge MJ was when I first became aware of popular music, or how much I loved Charlie's Angels (for all the criticisms that could be aimed at it today, they were three kick-ass women going out and living their lives on their own), but it's Friday. I got home last night and cleared my TiVo of Tonight Show episodes. Conan O'Brien did a tribute to Ed McMahon, and mainly it made me miss him and Johnny Carson something fierce. Humor isn't as accessible today as it was then; comedians think they have to be edgy or overly-sexualized, but I always find life's absurdities the funniest things, and so did Johnny and Ed. The two of them could make me laugh just by looking at each other, trying to suppress their own giggles.

I stayed home Wednesday, mainly because I couldn't wake up. I think I was conscious five hours, napping the rest. My hypochondria made me look up the symptoms for West Nile virus, because mosquitoes have been feasting on my arms and legs no matter how much DEET I apply before I leave the house. In the absence of a high fever, I have to keep looking for a cause (also, OMG, I know I say it often, but I hate Internet Explorer. Especially IE6. Come into the 21st century, work! Aieeeee!). And keep applying benedryl gel liberally, because otherwise the itch is unbearable.

Otherwise, I have been reading [info]bandombigbang stories and watching episodes of original Star Trek. From the beginning! The main things I've noticed:

*Way to not have a premise established. The first four episodes veer around like crazy in terms of who does what on the crew, and uniforms, and all sorts of stuff.
*Orange makeup. You might think I'm kidding, but I haven't seen that skin tone since the last time Valentino showed up on Go Fug Yourself, and it's everywhere.
*Uhura's legs are incredible.
*Sulu wins at the universe.
*Kirk attempting to guide a young man into society is possibly the most hilarious thing I've ever seen.
*Insanely complicated hair-dos on the women, except for Elizabeth Dehner's sleek bob. But Christine Chapel and Janice Rand? OMG.
*Leaping to conclusions in the face of next to no evidence, like such and such crewman is evil and must be stopped.
*The sets are gloriously cardboard.

A while ago, I decided to think of original Trek like a stage play version of events, because the technical and stylistic disparity with later incarnations is so pronounced. I expect the weird pacing and intonations then. Man. I am reading through a list of episodes and snickering at the ones I remember being silly. And then there are some that are genuinely good! At least, I think so. Science fiction morality plays exploring what it means to be human, or the ethical boundaries of some action. I kind of can't wait for Balance of Terror, where the Romulans are introduced.

You're the only thing I wouldn't change in this place, it's strange to say
The view out the train window this morning was more suited to evening – mist and fog and a river of headlights creeping along congested highways. Yesterday, I had to wear a jacket home in order to keep from freezing. At least it's supposed to be warmer today.

Mom had the carpets cleaned, so I arrived home to both a pervasive scent of lemon and damp toes (my shoes get kicked off as soon as possible). Teddy was disgruntled about the rain, and curled himself into a corner of my bed to sulk.

And then my attempt to finish writing this post was derailed by our IT folks, who spent three hours scanning my computer for viruses. I don't think they found anything, but wow, there goes the morning.

For [info]arsenicjade's fantastic Bandom Big Bang story, Cello Sonata No. 1 in B Minor "Naissance de Libertè", I made a fan mix. I think of it (pretentiously) as a tone poem in six acts, and was delighted to indulge in my love of the cello. It tries to follow the mood of the characters in the story, their emotional journey. It's a tough story, painful in places, but ultimately very satisfying.

I keep trying to come up with words to describe the watchfulness and trepidation I've felt toward events in Iran this past week. In the end, my greatest wish is for the Iranian people to be free, and able to pursue their dreams without government coercion. Their elections have been carefully stage-managed ever since the Ayatollahs took power in 1979, but if you lopped off the religious apparatus, they'd have a functioning democracy. Unfortunately, religious authority trumps all for now, and I'm uncertain if protests can and will change that. (If you have questions about Iran, I've been following it for years and years, and might be able to point you someplace with better explanations).

Mondays. Don't Talk to Me about Mondays.
At least not when a pitcher of mojitos played a prominent role in my Sunday evening. I keep staring blankly at my computer screen, then blinking my eyes shut, and then almost falling asleep at my desk. Feel headachey, tummy upset, would rather be sleeping. The headache is such a regular feature of my life that I don't know whether to fault migraine, sinus, or over-indulgence.

The mojitos were very tasty, though. Even as I soaked in the tub, reading a fashion magazine before scrubbing down my skin.

The Deputy is up in arms about a new project, and if he were better at reading my body language and facial expressions he'd realize I am not enthusiastic about his rush to completion when we don't even know what the problem is. At least Gum Snapper is off in a meeting. (I say this, and she will probably return in moments, wad of gum in her mouth, snapping away.)

Did anybody else watch the final episode of Pushing Daisies this weekend? I'd saved up the last three episodes to watch in a block, and felt both sniffly and happy at the end. Plus, bonus Gina Torres – she is always fantastic.

Also glad to see Kings return, with bonus behind-enemy-lines action.

Sunday afternoon, in the midst of the laundry process and helping Mom with her room cleanup efforts, I sat on the lounge chair out back. Teddy rested his chin on my ankle, and I donned my sunglasses to protect against glare while reading. The air was warm and dry, and I soaked up the sun.

Tonight, Kirby gets a bath. He will be most displeased, I know.

Let's Talk Trek
I took the day off yesterday, comp time for the marathon a couple of weeks ago. In the spirit of sloth, I slept late, petted my dogs, and then took a nap. Saturday I attended my first Nationals game, courtesy of my company. It was kind of a command performance, especially since they see me so rarely. I was disgruntled prior to heading out, because I'd rather have spent the evening watching Star Trek episodes, but once I got to the stadium I had fun. The DC cohort should consider an outing, really we should. The Nationals beat the Mets, beginning with a three-run romp in the first inning, and it continued apace. I see, looking at the sports section, that the good play did not continue. Oh, Nationals, how so bad?

[Side note: two guys at the office were discussing car stereos last week, and one of them mentioned something about "blaupunkt." I was startled, as the only time I recall hearing the term is during Crash's tirade to Nuke about respecting the game in Bull Durham. I always thought they made "quadraphonic blaupunkt" up, because it sounded so ridiculous.]

Sunday included a foray to the county fair with [info]principia_coh and [info]byronczimmer. I indulged in my love for lime fizz, sampled beignets (rectangular in shape – very odd), and wandered around the diminished craft tents. There was also a petting zoo with bunnies and kids and a camel! When I got home I collapsed and watched the French Open final. Go Roger! \o/ And I'd hope, after the Triple Crown results, that Birdstone's reputation as a sire would skyrocket.

My headphones are getting staticky, with one sound stream dropping out regularly. I need them to function perfectly so I can ignore Gum Snapper's transgressions. *grrrr*

Okay, it's probably bad of me (definitely bad of me), but the death of David Carradine in mysterious circumstances is irresistibly linked in my mind with the X-Files episode Clyde Bruckman's Final Repose. Auto-erotic asphyxiation, ahahahahahaha.

Pressure on the carotid body causes a discharge from the vagus nerve. This slows down the heart and can make a person pass out instantaneously. (That's why karate chops and the Vulcan nerve pinch target the vagus nerve.)


[Sidenote the second: I had no idea some people think Michael Hutchence died of auto-erotic asphyxiation. Huh. "Fresh" whatever, the new radio station that makes [info]smittywing crazy, played Devil Inside as I drove home the other week. I too thought in no way is this song fresh.]

The Vulcan nerve pinch mention allows me to segue into the wonders and horrors of Star Trek fanfic. kind of astonishingly rambling )

I need more Star Trek-related icons.

There are also all the looooong stories out of [info]bandombigbang to savor. Which doesn't even get into rereads of Star Trek novels. I finished The Romulan Way over the weekend. I ♥ that book.

Even if you don't mind
I spent yesterday battling a rotten headache and was cranky and groggy as a result. The rain didn't help matters – I'm pretty sure my sinuses were forecasting its arrival. I got home, let the puppies out back, and collapsed into my bed.

Mom woke me up just before nine, the headache had thankfully eased, and we celebrated Kirby's 16th birthday, at long last.

In other news, yay Burn Notice! I need to rewatch to get beyond sheer delight at my show's return, but this season looks like it's going to be fun.

I sampled Royal Pain[s?] on the grounds that I tend to like the mood set by USA original series. I wasn't actively turned off, which I feared during the opening scenes that looked like a standard medical drama. Those just aren't my thing. The adventures of a disgraced doctor among the rich and pretentious amused, though, and I like the assistant he somehow acquired. There's also a certain MacGyver flair to his diagnoses and subsequent emergency procedures. MacGyveresque sequences make me happy.

So does the fact that today is Friday. Even if it is still raining.

Why did it take fucking James Montgomery to explain adequately what cobracam.tv is? Why? I am in hysterics here, people.

There was a homoerotic shower scene -- why was I deprived of this amazing sight until now? Oh, Cobras, never change.

A massive thunderstorm rolled through here not long ago. I could predict it even without weather radar, thanks to the pain spiking through my forehead. Arrrrrgh.

Happy birthday, Kirby!
He turns sixteen today. Sixteen.

He's definitely slowed down in the past few months. Mom left me a voice mail today saying that this morning he celebrated by falling down the stairs, a rolly-polly tumble, but at the bottom stood up, shook himself off, and ambled to the back door.

I took him and Teddy for a walk tonight, and Kirby sniffed around, and trotted happily through the grass, and made me carry him up the stairs when we got home. If I hadn't, he would have planted himself at the first step and barked, demandingly, over and over until I came to answer to his will.

Work was insane this week. 24 hours worked on Thursday and Friday = one exhausted Pouncer. I slept the day away, and am contemplating the joys of another early night.

I'm giving it all she's got, Captain!
I wasn't sure about seeing the new Star Trek -- the first previews made me giggle hysterically, but reaction has been so positive around LJ that I thought I'd give it a try.

When I was in fifth grade, two girls at recess kept talking about this show airing on one of the local stations in the afternoon. They wanted to pretend to be these people called "Kirk" and "Spock" and I went home and saw for myself. We played Star Trek at recess, and I was McCoy (who is still my favorite) and the cardboard rocks and terrible special effects meant nothing compared to the drama of the Enterprise's voyages through space.

Star Trek was my introduction to fanfic, really, because I bought the novelisation of Wrath of Khan and fell in love with Saavik, then started to read the other novels on the book store shelf. I remember telling one of my friends, very earnestly, that The Wounded Sky by Diane Duane was really good once you got past all the science stuff in the beginning. We didn't have a VCR, so when the local channel stopped showing Star Trek, I only had the ever-expanding catalogue of novels to fill my craving. I have this weird half-knowledge of canon as a result, and all sorts of things from the books that I count as "real," like Diane Duane's Rihannsu or the existence of giant talking cats. I'm more familiar with the riffs on the show than on the show itself, I guess, although I am mightily tempted by online episodes.

I watched Next Generation faithfully, mostly at [info]djfanboy's house (best seasons: three and four), and loved Deep Space Nine until I started grad school and had no time to watch television anymore (seriously, two shows, both on weekends: X-Files and The Pretender. I am so glad I didn't discover the internet until after I graduated). Voyager didn't draw me in – I would see two random episodes a season and think, "yep, still bad." I disliked Janeway intensely for her hypocrisy in judging people's actions while she did things just as or more ethically dodgy. I watched the first 13 episodes of Enterprise, then it went on hiatus and I didn't see when it returned.

The last film I saw (I had to consult wiki), First Contact, didn't thrill, and I thought my time of dreaming of Star Fleet was done. Ha.

Who Will Save the Gerbils?
Ignoring a variety of frown-inducing personal stuff, I shall instead point you to this glimpse at the V revamp that ABC will premiere. I am torn between giggles and horror at this latest trip to the nostalgia well, but with Alan Tudyk and Morena Baccarin and Joel Gretsch, plus fond memories of my half-alien/human OTP (Elizabeth/Kyle Bates people: they were it when I was in middle school) I will check it out. I finished reading Guy Gavriel Kay's Fionavar Tapestry last night. I originally read it in college, before I knew of his connection to JRR Tolkien, and before I'd read Lord of the Rings. The influences are a lot more apparent now. I felt like the first few chapters were filled with incredibly awkward prose, but the writing improved once the story got going. TV scheduling: I am so, so relieved that the Gossip Girl spin-off did not get picked up, because it was abysmal (Andrew McCarthy as Lily's father notwithstanding). On the other hand, the cancellation of Terminator has me sniffling into my frosted mini-wheats.

Is Terminator: Salvation worth seeing? I was all excited at first, but now I'm uncertain. And I'm avoiding reviews because who knows if the reviewer shares my worldview?

Still no Star Trek, although that'll have to be remedied this weekend.

Work continues to be crazy.
